Heavier than water oil...? .....provoked 6,500 words of discussion...

A discussion extending from the question;

How to distill essential oils from plants?

http://bit.ly/eywmJ4

This image on the pages of the Still description, labels some of the end  product as "Heavier than water oil". On the web there are few references to oils "heavier than water".

But there must be oils heavier than water, we can "see" it in the photo.

Why does ice on cars vary and can we predict the properites of windscreen ice in advance?

During the current cold weather I notice that the ice on the windscreen of my car can have different properties from morning to morning when approached with my ice scraper. Sometimes it is powdery and easily removable, sometimes only a certain angle of attack with a scraper will do, and other days the ice has properties closer to that of iron!

Why is this and is there anyway of knowing just what the tired worker will be faced with on his/her windscreen in the morning in advance?

Which is better at removing the residue of a detergent - hot or cold water?

When washing up, shampooing my hair or just washing my hands, more foam is produced when using hot water.  It seems to take much longer to rinse (ie., until the foam disappears) using hot water than using cold.  If I use cold water, bubbles seems to disappear much more quickly.  My question is: which removes the most detergent?  Hot or cold water?  Or is about the same detergent residue left using either?

Reentry-turkey

If one drops a frozen turkey from a table, it hits the floor. If one instead drops it from space, it burns up in the atmosphere. Thus, there should be one altitude in between from which you can drop it for it to be done when it comes down.

I realize that it's probably going to go black on the outside and still stay frozen on the inside. How can you deal with this? I will accept leaving it for some time after the fall to allow the heat to distribute properly, I will also accept some or a lot of the outside to burn up if the centre is cooked, burned turkey can be removed but I've heard bad things about uncooked bird.

How does this change with the stuffing? Will it help a lot to thaw it?

Lithium-ion batteries. Sudden lack of capacity.

My laptop has a lithium ion battery, which has served me well for a year or so. Lasting rougly 3 hours at 100%. But a few days ago, when my battery was removed from the laptop for half an hour or so, the capactiy dropped to 15 minutes.

I know how these batteries "wear down" over time, due to corrotion of the lithium cathode and whatnot. But I would've expected a steady decline, rather than a sudden and extreme fall in capacity.

Actual question: Why did the capacity of my lithium-ion battery suddenly drop from 3 hours to 15 minutes? And was it related to the fact that the battery was removed from the laptop.

Prior to the credit crunch did the increased availability of credit drive a tangible advance in technology?

During the relatively short period of time when credit was much easier to come by for the everyday person did it generate increased competition forcing companies to improve their products more often and in imaginative ways and as a result fastrack R&D and are we benefiting from this in an measurable economic way at present or are continuing improvements in technological development basically exponential and would have happened anyway.

How does a blackberry junket set?

Richad Mabley's recipe for a blackerry junket is as follows:

"a junket made from nothing other than blackberry juice. Remove the juice from the very ripest blackberries with the help of a juice extractor, or by pressing them through several layers of muslin. Then simply allow the thick dark juice to stand undisturbed in a warm room. Do not stir or cool the juice, or add anything to it. After a few hours it will have set to the consistency of a ligh junket, and can be eaten with cream and sweet biscuits"

I have made this and it works beautifully (i highly recommend it). What makes it set? Would i work with an other fruit?

Double boil

After a mug of water has been boiled in a microwave, it goes 'off the boil' on removal but then, when a tea bag is added, it all boils up again - why?
