If I need ten copies of a document, is it more environmentally friendly to print one copy and photocopy it 9 times?

I'm researching this for my company, in the name of 'green IT'.  Is there a tipping point?  A number of copies at which it becomes better to use one of the methods?

We're very aware of the carbon problem with respect to the environment, but how big is the issue of a broken nitrogen cycle?

Is it more environmentally friendly to laser print in colour or black and white?

In my office we fill out a time sheet each week, which has a yellow background and must be printed out on a laser printer.  I print mine in colour, but many colleagues print the sheet in black and white so the background colour comes out light grey.  They claim this is more environmentally friendly.  But I say there's no evidence that black ink has a higher environmental cost than yellow ink, so it makes no difference.  Who is right?

Flight path

There is a tree outside my window that is frequented by bees. Any time I look outside there are at least a few bees flying from leaf to leaf, and stopping to walk around the leaves that they land on (see Photo). I've seen individual bees continue this behaviour for a while. Why are they doing this?Charlie F, Berkeley, California, US

Do you have it in green?

Is it more damaging to the planet to buy a new, greener car than it is to use my old, more-polluting car until it finally falls to pieces? I've heard that producing a new car would consume more resources - and so is actually more environmentally harmful. Is this true?Paulo Forti, Rome, Italy

Ice circles

In February, the tarmac roof of my office building in Hilversum was covered in hoar-frost. When I went for a walk up there, I noticed some circle-shaped patches. An outer annulus had a darker colour than the surrounding hoar-frost, an inner disk was ice-free, and in the middle of the larger patches sat a millimetre-sized ice grain, resembling a small hail stone. There were some hundred of these patches, some merged, or with multiple ice-free inner disks. The day had started out freezing, but when I noticed the pattern, it was around 10 ° Celsius. All day, the sky had been sunny, but the tarmac was in the shadow of a building. What caused these patches?Bruno van Wayenburg, Leiden, Netherlands
