Why do human beings use their hands when speaking? Did we evolve from using basic signals to speech?

Why can we eat and drink so hot stuff?

Sometimes for strengthening my hair, I make herb mixes or use single herbs  that are perfectly drinkable, like camomile or black tea. Only I make them stronger and let them stand for at least 30 minutes. Once I wanted to be quick and brewed the stuff just before washing my hair. Afterwards as I poured some into the palm of my hand in order to use it, it almost burned me. I found this strange and took a sip - it was not at all too hot to drink, only too strong.

Why does the mouth have no problem with temperatures that are too hot for the hand? I can guess part of the answer: we're used to it. Children get lukewarm food, and then we gradually increase the temperature. OK but when I try to let my hands get used to hot water - maybe the palms would, but the backs become rough and red...

Does the direction of any particular writing script indicate the 'handedness' of the people who invented it?

A marked tendency to right-handedness seems evident in modern technology - for example, the shutter button on cameras is always on the right, while espresso machines always have the steam injector on the right.

I was wondering if the direction of particular types of writing is a clue to whether the people inventing them were left- or right-handed.  For example, were the R>L Hebrew and Arabic scripts more likely to be invented by left-handers, and did the L>R Roman/Greek scripts come from right-handers?

I've no idea if Chinese or other oriental scripts (especially when written in columns) exhibit 'handedness', but I'd be interested to know.

Why do right-handed people fret guitars or violins with their left hands?

When playing a conventional "right-handed" stringed instrument such as a guitar or violin, the player uses their right hand to pluck the strings or hold the bow, and uses the left hand to stop the strings on the fret or fingerboard. Of these two types of action, the left hand appears to be doing much more complicated and extended fine-motor movements than the right hand.

So why is this the preferred configuration of the instrument for right-handers? Left-handed instruments are available as mirror-image versions - Paul McCartney has guitars like this - which suggests some left-handers also prefer the same relative allocation of hand activities.

Why do we rub our faces with hands when we are tired or sleepy? How does that help us stay alert?
