Counter-taserism

At the recent conference of the Police Federation of England and Wales there was a call for the increased use of tasers (and, of interest to etymologists, the appearance of the verb "to tase"). Purely in the interests of research, what could be done by an individual to lessen the effect of being tased? What happens if the tased person grabs the officer who has fired the taser? If the tasee is wearing rubber-soled shoes, will that help? Alternatively, if they are standing in a puddle, will that worsen the effect? And what would a master criminal need to become invulnerable to tasing - a full-body rubber suit?Adil Hussain, Birmingham, UK

An ill wind

When you are feeling nauseous, why does a cold environment make you feel so much better? Contrast this to a warmer, more humid environment, which makes you feel much, much worse.Brian Woodhill, Manningham, West Yorkshire, UKThere seems to be no clear explanation for this effect, but lots of possible ideas - Ed

Eye for the pink

I have just found this illusion online (click the image to see it). If you follow the movement of the rotating pink dot, it remains pink. However if you stare at the black cross, the moving dot appears green. If you concentrate on the black cross for a while, all the pink dots will slowly disappear, leaving only a rotating green dot. There is no green dot, and the pink dots don't disappear. How does this work?Gordon Toumaniantz, Saint Maigrin, France

Finger Roll

Why is it that regardless of whether you are left-handed, right-handed or ambidextrous, you find it much easier to drum your fingers starting with your little finger rather than your forefinger?Dave Scates, Pyrfod, Surrey, UKThanks to all of those who offered anatomical explanations, but it seems that they are misplaced. We have uncovered an important subset of the population, some of whom are clearly in need of reassurance - Ed

Red eye

When watching an electric bar fire immediately after it is switched on and before the bars glow red, I observe a brief phase when the exposed metal element coils appear to go matt black. A friend suggested that I am one of the few people whose eyes are infrared sensitive. Could this be the explanation? If not, what am I seeing?Mike Rogers Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire

Itch hitch

Occasionally, I get two simultaneous itches, for example, one in my side and one in my ankle. Scratching one relieves the itch in both places. On other occasions I have been given an injection by a doctor and have noticed that the sharp pain caused by the needle is echoed in another part of my body, or is there another reason?Ian Docherty, No address supplied

Scratch and sniff

For all of my 27 years I have been extremely allergic to furry animals, being unable to last a couple of minutes with one around without starting to sneeze and itch. Last December I gave up caffeine drinks and subsequently my allergy has completely disappeared. Is there a connection?Eleanor Roberts, Hounslow, Middlesex

Sun sums

An excess of sun is bad for you because of the risk of skin cancer. On the other hand, a little sun is good for you because it helps the skin to produce vitamin D. This is why sunbathing was promoted early in this century to combat rickets. Has anyone ever tried to quantify the level of good and safe sunlight? What is the efficiency of vitamin D production versus sun intensity? If such work exists, can it be translated into simple Sun exposure recommendations for the public?J. C.
