Drinking games

My brother, an avid bodybuilder and a far more rigorous self-disciplinarian than I, tells me that a common practice on competition days is to drink alcohol, which causes the muscles to swell temporarily. His tipple of choice is brandy, but it allegedly words with any strong spirit. Is this a genuine phenomenon, and if so, how does it occur?tbc

Sour cure

I was interested to read recently that the only cure for hiccups with a scientific basis was to breathe with a paper bag over your mouth to raise the level of carbon dioxide in your body. However, I find a spoonful of vinegar stops hiccups immediately. It also works well with tomato ketchup, which also contains vinegar. Why?A. H. Clayton, Farnborough, Hampshire

Complex colouring

I was taught at university that brown eyes were genetically dominant to blue eyes, and that two blue-eyed parents could not have a brown-eyed child, only one with blue eyes. I now understand that recent research has proved this to be untrue and that in some circumstances two blue-eyed parents can have a brown-eyed child. What has the new research uncovered and how does the newly discovered genetics work?Alan Wheal, Birkenshaw, West Yorkshire, UK

I don’t like that!

As the parent of a toddler with the usual unpredictable food preferences, I wonder what would be the healthiest combination of three or four basic foods (plus water, of course). For example, how would a toddler cope on a diet of broccoli, cheddar cheese and oats?Elizabeth Matka, Birmingham, UK
