Does cartilage ever heal?

5 months ago I got the cartilage in the top of my ear pierced. I had persistant and numerous problems with infection and irritation. A number of people informed me that this is because it takes longer for cartilage to heal in the new shape. I have since removed the earring and the hole closed over and began to heal almost immediately. I have heard similar stories from people who have had theirs for years. So does this mean cartilage heals? and if so why did i have to have numerous torn pieces of cartilage removed from the meniscal discs in my knee? why didn't it heal?

If the Human Eye was a Digital Camera and Lens, what would its Specifications be?

 ie

  • How many megapixels would it have?
  • What would its resolution (dpi) be?
  • What would its ISO range be?
  • What would its colour depth be?
  • What is its focal length? How does it's field of view and depth of field compare to a standard 50mm lens?
  • The eye doesn't zoom, but does the brain do any of this for us? Its seems like it when concentrating on something or if something attracts our attention.
  • At what speed can an object pass the eye before it appears blurred? Ie "shutter speed" equivalent.
  • How many "frames per second" can it process?
  • I believe the brain compensates for white balance? Does the eye have a natural "default" white balance setting which the brain then compensates for?

Mechanism behind "opening the floodgates" when drinking alcohol

I have yet to find a person not affected in this way while drinking, and I can't put my finger on why it happens.

Alcohol as many people know inhibits ADH (Anti-Diuretic Hormone) in the Pituitary and makes you need to urinate more. Okay, fine... But why can people last for a few hours (well, a substantial amount of time at least) before urinating for the first time while drinking alcohol. But after urinating for the first time, the urge to go again comes incredibly quickly, hence the common colloquialism: "opening the floodgates".

Can anyone help to explain?

What was the biggest factor in the brain development of our early human ancestors?

I recently read an article suggesting the main cause was the change of diet from eating grains and plants to meat, though previously I had read it was the change in social structure i.e.; grandmother, aunts and so on that allowed for free time from continual searching for food and caring for young that was the lagest factor. Which of these theories is most likely to be right?

Why are you not supposed to drink spirits if eating shellfish?

A friend of mine went to a restaurant, and on the menu next to the oysters, it recommended that you not drink spirits if eating oysters. Upon asking a waiter why, he said that they recommend not to take spirits with any type of shellfish, but he wasnt forthcoming with a definitive answer why?

Is there any merit to this?
