Why do plants smell better than animals?

I know this is very subjective but I think you can generally say that most humans prefer the smell of most plants and their raw products to the smell of most animals and their raw products (I am not talking about fried meat), including other humans and even themselves.

At least, there hardly is a stink coming from a plant that compares with human or dogs' excrements, and I also can't think of a smell coming from animals that would be as pleasant as lilac, mint, whole uncut apples, trees "waking up" in early spring...

Even if there are, they are not so common.

Why is this? Do we instinctively like plants more because they give us the oxygen we need and don't compete with us about it?

Memory stored in body.. Answer for 'Phantom limbs'?

I remember hearing a while back, on a science podcast by Dr. Karl Kruszelnicki, that it is possible that memory is stored throughout the body aswel as in the brain. I'm not sure how correct this theory is, but if it is in fact true could it have any link to 'Phantom limbs'? I was thinking that maybe the body remembers how, an arm for example, moves or feels even when no longer there. This maybe sends signals to the brain (which knows the arm isn't there) but because the memory is stored elsewhere it causes confusion and leads you to interpret the memory as present truth. Could this be at all possible?

X-ray dangers?

After breaking my arm I had to have many x-rays on my hand, arm and wrist. When the radiologist was about to take it not only did she leave me but there were many lead jackets hung up beside the machine - there was about five or six X-rays in total. Should I be woried aout any long or short term damage to me? Also when I was very young my father had to hold me down for an X-ray could there be any damage to him aswell?

why do we have a sesamoid bone in the knee?

is there a reason we have a separate bone to articulate the knee (patella), yet elbow articulation is achieved through an extension of an existing bone (olecranon process)? did we evolve them seperately to suit our activities, and do other primates share a similar skeletal anatomy, or have they different structures to suit their movement patterns? it seems to me that the structure of the 2 joints are similar enough ( 1 strong bone forming a hinge joint with 2 smaller bones which articulate about each other) yet the patella seems more susceptible to injury and dislocation. would we be better off with a solid extension of the tibia or would this have led to other problems? i am currently studying a sports injuries course, and the tutor (who obviously understands more on the subject than me by the way, yet doesn't satisfy my curiosity sufficiently) states that we need a patella because of the fine proprioceptive requirements of the leg, but if anything i would have placed (if i were creating humans from scratch) a strongly attatched bony process for the knee joint for weight bearing, and a finely controlled sesamoid bone joint in the elbow for finer hand dexterity. what am i missing?

Are there vehicles that can transport a human more efficiently and emit less CO2 than by walking with one's own feet?

Some engines can operate at higher temperatures/pressures than the human body. On the other hand, vehicles have extra weight, possibly have different drag characteristics, etc. For "normal" speeds and loads, what would be the properties of a vehicle at a crossover point equal to the efficiency of an average human?

Why does noise wake you up?

Why do loud noises wake you from sleep? Also, how come it's more difficult to fall asleep in noisey environments, but only if the noises are 'irregular'? By that I mean, it seems easier to fall asleep when there is constant white noise such as an engine running.

How many Bananas would one have to eat to get radiation poisoning?

We were in physics a few days ago and we were studying radioactivity, our teacher mentioned that even bananas contain radioactive elements. So I was wondering, how many bananas do you theoretically have to eat to get radiation poisoning?

Where on the planet would humans live if we hadn't invented clothes?

Having recently moved to Canada from the UK it struck me that everybody has to wear extra clothes to keep warm, but the caribou I saw the other day don't seem to notice the freezing temperatures. Animals that live in the Arctic for example are well adapted to their environment e.g. thick fur or layers of fat, but if humans had not invented clothes where on the planet would we be able to survive?
