Last Word weekly roundup for Friday 13 August

Most people can remember little from before the age of 3, but do "photographic" memories start earlier? And are the earliest photographic memories retained fully formed, unlike fragmented normal memories? Help Laex find an answer

Flies are not known for having long memories, which could be why they seem never to tire of flying into windows. Ben12!? would like to know why they don't appear to do themselves any damage when they do this at high speed.

Most memories fade or get corrupted over time, but our sense of time passing is highly variable and little understood. jamie534 is interested in whether the way we measure time affects the way we perceive its passing.

Our brazen attempt to make memory and time the theme of the week runs into the sand with the next question  though there is a never-ending quality to housework: Alexa’s father insists it's harder to wash up in cold water, but she reckons the temperature of the water makes no difference. So which of them is right?.

Finally, remember when you used to write things on paper? Have you ever wondered whether the direction of a writing script indicates the "handedness" of those who invented it? Help grannybuttons answer this intriguing question.

What age does a photographic / eidetic memory start?

People with 'normal' memory can't remember much from before the age of 2, but is this the same for people with an eidetic memory? And does the eidetic memory start off fractured (as normal memory does) and evolve, or is it instant from the age it kicks in?

Do we ever "re-live" experiences?

Is it possible to re-experience a physical experience ,purely out of memory, for e.g,can you contemplate and in a way literally experience the feeling you get, say, when you take a walk in winters?Surely, the brain must store such things?

What in memory terms is on the ' tip of my tongue ' ?

When I have the memory of of a word on the tip of my tongue and then it slips from my grasp, what is it that I so briefly hold? It is not the word itself otherwise I would have retrieved it. The ' lost 'word seems to have a cloud of associations around it; in one instance I picked out the rhythm of the syllables and the word rushed forwards immediately. What is going on?

Does breathing normally or changing breathing rate affect your recall of a memory?

Is the part of the brain that controls automatic breathing and the part of the brain that stores memories the same or are they somehow connected? If you interrupt your breathing rate and recall a memory do you activate a certain part of the brain that handles both breathing rate and memories?
