I've been told plants have a negative affect on oxygen at night so shouldn't be in your bedroom. Is this poppycock?

Why do cloves soften rigid plastic container rated recycle #3?

We purchased ground cloves in a large container marked with a #3 for recycling. As time passes, the rigid container becomes soft. The texture is that of a uninflated beachball.

Ant architects

The photo (above) shows a green sweet that has been discovered by ants on a paved path in my garden. The sweet had been dropped several hours before, and had attracted the interest of an ant colony which was carrying it away. But the pattern of the surrounding plant debris is a mystery. What accounts for its arrangement around the candy?

Why are plants green?

I know about Chlorophyll, but why do most plants have green pigments? Surely a darker colour, like in a Red Beech, would be more favourable?

Why does chlorophyll only absorb such a small part of the electromagnetic spectrum?

My understanding is that chlorophyll only absorbs a very narrow range of wavelengths in the EM spectrum, why have evolution and natural selection not favoured a broader region?

Thanks, James

Strange branch on Laburnum Tree

Our small Laburnum suddenly grew a thicker paler branch from the regular dark green one.  The thick branch then rapidly sprouted a number of vertical branches forming a dense block of foliage quite different from the rest.  What was going on?
