Some bird species, such as the great-crested grebe (pictured),
hunt underwater for fish and have red eyes. The red colouring is
presumably beneficial to these diving birds, but in what way? If it does
provide an advantage, why have other birds with similar habits not
evolved red eyes?
When I opened my curtains this morning and looked out over a flat part of roof, I noticed that last night's rainwater had turned a bright red colour. (see attached image)
The colour isn't caused by algae, since the water is relatively fresh, and it doesn't appear to be blood either, since there aren't any dead animals on the roof.
Long story short, does anyone have any clue as to what could have caused the bright red colour?
I was watering my plants and some of the water spilled onto a mushroom that was growing in the pot. The water turned red shortly after making contact with the mushroom. What caused this?
