High ball cocktail

When I lived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, I played badminton and squash. The reduced air resistance at 2600 metres altitude makes a perceptible difference to the flight of a shuttlecock: it travels much further.Should there also be a noticeable difference to the flight of a squash ball? If there is an effect it is less noticeable, but my squash partners and I would like to think that it exists, rather than admit age and a lack of fitness are slowing us down?Mark Harvey, London, UK(Image: a_kartha, stock.xchng)

Down in one

Why is it so much easier to drink a whole pint of beer or orange squash, say, in one go than it is to down a pint of water?Geoff Lane, Bury, Lancashire, UK

Net rage

When a thread or topic is started on a user-generated forum on the internet, it isn't long before one of the contributors makes a seemingly unprovoked attack on a total stranger. What is it about non-face-to-face contact of this kind that makes this more common than it would otherwise be?John Anderson, Warsaw, Poland

Brolly life

When I took the cover off my picnic table's sun umbrella I found a number of these structures running down one of the folds (see Photo, left). They look like they are made of dried mud and inside each one is a vivid yellow powder and a single thin, curled-up larva. Each structure was about 5 centimetres long. What did it, how did it do it, how long did it take - and should I get rid of them?Ian Gilbert, Monks Eleigh, Suffolk, UK

Ride the curves

Why are velodromes shaped the way they are? What's the science involved?Specifically, why do they have such high curves, especially as hardly any cyclists seem to venture up there, and why do they have sloping straights? Also, what are the different coloured lines on the track for?Brian Porter, London, UK(Image: Santac, Wikimedia Commons)

Does anything eat wasps?

In a recent conversation about food chains, a colleague wondered if anything ate wasps. Someone suggested "very stupid birds". Does anyone know any more about this?Tom Eastwood, London, UK

The hole truth

I have always been fascinated by evolution, and while I can usually see why and how certain characteristics evolved in different species, I'm confused by whales and dolphins. How did their breathing holes evolve, bearing in mind their ancestors were land mammals?Joe Bilsborough, Tarbock, Merseyside, UK

Smells fine to me

I recently bought a spray-on deodorant. When I got it home I realised it was intended for women but, not wanting to waste money, I used it anyway. Nothing untoward happened and I received no strange looks from colleagues or friends. So what are the differences between deodorants meant for men and those that are meant for women? How might using the "correct" deodorant for your sex work better than using one meant for the opposite sex, and what are the pitfalls of applying a deodorant intended for the opposite sex?Alan Ainscroft, Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

Misty morn

While camping in the desert north of Coober Pedy, South Australia, on 8 July 2007, my son and I were privileged to witness a white rainbow at daybreak (see Photo, left). The landscape was covered in mist and the white rainbow's arc seemed to grow as the sun came up, though it faded away as the mist evaporated. I've asked old swagmen, indigenous locals and several lecturers at two universities, but none has ever witnessed the phenomenon. What caused it?Fred Richardson, Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia

Rain imminent

During the Monaco Grand Prix, I was watching the drivers battle with the damp conditions when the commentator said that rain was expected at the track in 6 minutes. How can forecasting be so accurate? If such technology is available, why isn't it offered to the public? Incidentally, the rain didn't arrive on this occasion, but was predicted with such confidence that presumably the forecasting must be accurate most of the time.Derek Bolon, Tetbury, Gloucestershire, UK
