Rip off

Try tearing a piece of sticky tape across its width and you're asking for trouble but, if you nick it with a sharp object first, it tears easily. Why?Daniel Albert, Science Museum, London, UK

Nd game

Upon leaving the house early one frosty morning, I noticed the emblem on my car was frosted over on all the letters but one. The N was completely frost-free (see Photo). The outside temperature was hovering around 0 °C. If all the letters were constructed of the same material, surely they would all appear the same, so why is the N special?Nikki Cherry, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, UK

I left my heart...

Why does one really seem to feel the emotional response known colloquially as a "broken heart" in the middle of one's chest; indeed actually in the region of the heart?Mark Collen, Sacramento, California, US

That's the spirit

After painting, I washed my brush in white spirit and wiped it on a paper towel. Later I noticed the towel was covered in flies, that apparently suffered no harm (see Photos). They stayed there for at least an hour. What kind of flies would be attracted to white spirit? I later found more flies drowned in a jar of white spirit some distance away.Andrew Richardson, Pembury, Kent, UK

Contrary cotton

Some garments made of 100 per cent cotton will hang-dry on the washing line without creases, while other pure cotton items end up covered with stubborn creases that only a steam iron will shift. Why is this? Is it the quality of the cotton, or perhaps the species of cotton plant it comes from? And while we're on the subject, some cotton towels never really absorb the moisture from your body however many times they are washed, while others - initially resistant while new - age into the job perfectly well after visiting the washing machine. What's going on?Diana Ball, by email, no address supplied

Tomato attack

Every time I collect tomatoes in the garden, my hands end up covered with an invisible substance with a pungent smell. It seems to come from the tomato leaves and branches. When I wash my hands with soap, the substance becomes a very bright yellow-green - almost fluorescent - and it stains my soap, towel and wash basin. However, if I don't use soap to wash the substance off, it remains invisible. What is it?Alex Saragosa, Terranuova, Italy

Eleven out of six

While making a cake I cracked three eggs from a box of half a dozen and all three had double yolks. A few days later I used the three remaining eggs, and two of them were doubles. This column once told us how to spot eggs that have double yolks (12 December, 1998) but not how they arise. Why do some eggs have double yolks and what is the probability of getting eleven yolks from a standard box of six eggs?Chris McManus, London, UK
