Do lullabies really work?

If babies are really sent to sleep by a lullaby then can this be used for adult insomniacs?

Sleep

When you fall asleep you loose sence of time; you feel like you may have been asleep for 5 minutes but it has been a few hours. how is this made possible? why does it feel like you have been asleep for not long when in reality it has been hours.

I have always wondered if a strong smell can wake you up immediately like a loud noise.

White to left

When I wake up, the white of my left eye is always slightly pink. This isn't the result of blood pooling on the left side of my body as I invariably sleep on my right side. After 10 minutes my left eye is back to the same white as my right eye. My left eye can start out even pinker if I have drunk too much alcohol the night before, but it still reverts to white after 10 minutes. I'm not concerned - it has been like this for years - but what is the cause?

would switching to a polyphasic style of sleep be healthy?

most doctors say you need a good 7-8 hours sleep a night (as an adult). but would someone miss out on the "rest and repair" which sleep brings by having a polyphasic sleep cycle?

Why do animals sleep at night?

I don't see the benefit of sleeping at night in the wild, especially since this is when the animal is most vulnerable...
