The smell of rice cooking gives me a bad headache, why is this?

This used to torment me as a child, it's got better as I've got older but it still happens (I'm now 36). Recovery time was longer when I was younger than now. It happens almost instantaneously when I walk into a kitchen where it's cooking or has been recently cooked.

Flower power

Why are humans attracted to the sight and smell of flowers? Flowers co-evolved with their pollinators: that is why they find flowers attractive. This arrangement works to the benefit of both parties, so do humans get any similar benefits from liking flowers? The plants do, in that gardeners propagate them. Come to think of it, are other mammals attracted to flowers?

Smelly lucre

"The smell of money" is more than a figure of speech: there is no doubt that paper money has a distinctive odour, especially when it is new. So what causes that special smell of the just-issued, brand-new banknotes that I get from the ATM?

No one can hear you sniff

I've heard that being in space supresses your sense of smell. If so, why?

Old Person's smell

What is it exactly that old people smell of ? I don't mean like unclean old people, I mean that distinct musty kind of smell that you get with some old people ...its always the same and I wondered what caused it and why?

Odour water

If I keep a plastic mineral-water bottle topped up with tap water and regularly drink directly from it, the neck smells vile after a couple of weeks. Why is this and why is it always exactly the same smell?

Can smell wake you up?

I have always wondered if a strong smell can wake you up immediately like a loud noise.
