I photographed this on the railing of my deck. It seems as if the trail of slime was swithcing on and off but as the animal uses the slime to enable it to move how is this possible? What else could have made this trail? I have a couple more photos.
When you put a slug or snail on a sheet of glass and look at it's muscular foot from beneath, you see waves of dark and light bands moving from the back of the slug to its front. I understand that these are muscular contractions that move in waves to propel the slug, but if they are moving from the rear of the slug to the front, shouldn't the slug be propelled backwards (ie - in the opposite direction to the motive force)?
We found huge numbers of snails on two trees close together by the side of the road on a recent holiday to the South of France.
Grouping together in such a large and visible way seems like a crazy idea for an animal that must be prey - so why would snails be displaying this sort of behaviour?
