What is the best estimate of (A) the number of grains of sand on Earth and (B) the number of stars in the Universe (this one!)?

We very often read that the Universe has more stars than there are grains of sand on Earth.  Is this quantitatively demonstrable or mere hyperbole?

Can you light a fire with starlight?

Anyone with a magnifying glass or a shaving mirror can light a fire by focussing sunlight into a spot on a piece of paper and burn a hole.

Can the same trick be done with starlight? If so what diameter of mirror or lens will be needed? And which star would be the best choice?

Seeing stars

Yesterday I tripped over a fence post I had just pulled from the ground. When my face hit the concrete around the bottom of the post, I literally saw stars. Today I have a shiny new black eye and a few questions. What are those stars and what causes them?

What is this strange star?

For months now I have noticed an unusually bright star in the west from dusk onwards. It appears when no other stars do in the brightest part of the sky. I dont think its the north star because of its positioning. Do you know what it could be?

Are all stars found within galaxies?

Are all the stars we can see within the milky way?  and if so are there any stars that are in the spaces between galaxies?

I was thinking about this when star trek was on, as they always have millions of stars in the background of space shots.  Does this mean that instead of exploring the whole universe they were actually only looking around in one galaxy?
