Can Convex side of the Moon Crescent tell us the direction?

The convex side of the moon cresent indicates the lighted aspect facing the Sun, which means it points to the direction where the Sun is.

Can we then presume that the Convex side points to the West in night and the East in Early Mornings before sunrise. (Provided the moon is in Crescent phase of course!!)

Will the reversal of magnetic poles, of Earth, result in Sun rising and setting from the opposite directions?

Being a student of physics, reversal of magnetic poles of Earth has been quite a topic of concerned for me. But I didn't know that it's now shifting so fast.

The thing which I wanna know is, would this, shifting of magnetic poles of Earth, result in sun rising and setting from the opposite directions, I mean, after that Sun will rise from West and will set in East. I'm not very sure but what I've studied so far from that I think YES it would. Can anyone explain this?

What percent of carbon dioxide is consumed by a plant's daily respiration?

Of all the CO2 taken in during a day, only some of it can be used with the remainder being exhaled.  Is there any way to characterize that amount as a very rough guide to understanding the consumption of CO2 by plants?+

On the spike

I was walking from Cowes on the Isle of Wight to Yarmouth along the coastal path in June. When nearing Yarmouth we saw this strange spike standing upright on a leaf (see photo). The top of the spike has broken off to the right. What created it? If it's of any use, the weather was warm.David Winstanley, Norwich, UK

Thinking person's crumpet

A little while ago we froze a packet of those pancake-like products that in these parts we call crumpets. At the time, the sealed plastic packet seemed to contain a lot of air, but after four months in our freezer it had contracted tightly against the crumpets, which had also shrunk. After two more months at room temperature, the whole package appeared to have shrunk still further, though with no sign of mould or decay (see photo, left). The ingredients are listed as flour, water, yeast, raising agents, E450, E500, salt, sugar, preservative, calcium propionate. What's going on?Chris Greenwood, Ettington, Warwickshire, UK

The colour of anemone

For a scuba diver, one of the best underwater sights is a rock face covered in brilliantly coloured jewel anemones (Corynactis viridis). They exist in many colours, and often vivid contrasting colours are found side by side. There are also subdued, semi-transparent variants. Most species of wild animals have evolved to just one or a narrow range of colours, while flowers can have a range of vivid colours, presumably to attract a variety of insects. As far as I know, the anemones aren't trying to attract their prey - it just arrives on the current. So why are they so vivid and so varied?George Gall, Truro, Cornwall, UK(Image: Kunstformen der Natur by Ernst Haeckel / Wikimedia Commons)
