Is this forum still maintained?

Does somebody from "New Scientist" still look after this pages?

It is now about 4 weeks since the "latest questions" on home page

were  renewed the last time.

Oxygen vs Carbon-dioxide in normal air.

When the classic simple demonstration is done with a bell jar inverted over a bath of water, with a floating lighted candle inside, as the Oxygen is used up, the water rises up the bell jar about one fifth or 20 - 21% of the way up, until the candle goes out, showing that there is approx 21% Oxygen in normal air.

However, 21% volume of Oxygen surely cannot equate to 0% volume of Carbon dioxide, so where did the carbon-dioxide go? Surely, it must have some volume?

Is thought and consciousness the reason we exist in this dimension?

Is it the reason we exist at all? Because atoms can be in more than one place at any time it is not until an atom is measured or viewed that it then takes up the position that it does, so without anything to view it an atom is in many places at the same time, do our thoughts cause this three dimensional universe we live in to exist, to be, to happen? without some sort of consciousness, a viewer, be it human or any other life form this universe would not be here, I would not be writing this and you would not be reading it. Is life just thought? And so does it gives us the ability to live in a physical form in a three dimensional world?

Why do I shiver when I yawn?

It doesn't happen every time and it's more likely to happen with a larger yawn but I shake/shiver when I yawn and I was just wondering why. Also does everyone get this or is it just me?

Do birds see the colour white at all?

We all know there are lots of birds that have white wings.  Recently, many bird species have been proven to be tetrachromatic i.e. they have cone opsins able to absorb at UV wavelengths and so can discriminate ultraviolet light as well.  Does this mean that they cannot see white?

Cordless antistatic wrist strap

I recently saw for sale (from China) cordless anti-static wrist straps.  Apparently you just slip the bracelet on - no grounding required - and any static charge you might have disappears.  How on earth do they work?

How does the way we measure time affect the way we perceive its passing?

Hypothetically, if a child was brought up without any reference to our human measurements of time (seconds, minutes, hours, days etc.), would it affect his/her concept of time passing?

For instance, we all have a general idea of how long 30 minutes is, but if someone was brought up without the ability to estimate how many minutes have passed, would they percieve time differently to the rest of us?

I know that the moon controls the tides on earth, but how? What do we mean by 'controls'?

How can a body so far away from earth be so influential?

What is really meant by 'the moon controls the tides'?
