Achoo blues

Twice, when donating blood platelets to the Red Cross, I've started sneezing uncontrollably. Assistants respond immediately by giving me Tums, a brand of antacid indigestion tablet. Their explanation is that Tums restores my calcium balance.I understand how my calcium could get out of whack when my blood is being removed, filtered and given back to me without platelets, but what does this have to do with sneezing?Heather Hallen, East Lansing, Michigan, US

Clear waters

After an electrical storm, the water in my father's small fish pond is crystal clear, having previously been full of green algae. Similarly, my parents' drinking water comes straight from a nearby reservoir and often contains organic matter, but a storm also appears to clean it up. What could cause this?Michelle, Johannesburg, South Africa(Image: enrika79, stock.xchng)

Ride the curves

Why are velodromes shaped the way they are? What's the science involved?Specifically, why do they have such high curves, especially as hardly any cyclists seem to venture up there, and why do they have sloping straights? Also, what are the different coloured lines on the track for?Brian Porter, London, UK(Image: Santac, Wikimedia Commons)

The hole truth

I have always been fascinated by evolution, and while I can usually see why and how certain characteristics evolved in different species, I'm confused by whales and dolphins. How did their breathing holes evolve, bearing in mind their ancestors were land mammals?Joe Bilsborough, Tarbock, Merseyside, UK
