best ways to keep warm on a football pitch

i've been wonding about this for a while now, and decided to look here for an answer,

i play in goal for a football (soccer) team, and while playing in matches, often in the wind and rain, i often find myself getting cold/wet. Are there any positions that i can stand it to minimise the ammount of me getting wet, cold etc.

Weak when wet?

Why are some substances weak when wet - for example, paper?

What causes this?

EDIT: Jon, thanks for your great answer.

I assume when mentioning oil and water it is to do with the fact that oil is a non-polar solvent whereas water is polar (delta + and - right?)

Actually would you be kind enough to fully explain this to me?

Thanks!

Why does cold weather dry my skin out?

Generally things dry out more slowly the colder it is, yet as soon as winter arrives my hands become so dry the skin splits.

Why does a person taste better when he/she is wet?

When you're swimming with someone and you kiss them, they taste so much better than they would dry!
